Missouri Enterprise will present an overview of Lean concepts with Lean Office implementation topics and the benefits of Lean. Lean implementation is a challenging cultural change for any organization. Lean Office specifically focuses on identification of value added and non-value added activities in the office environment. Office staff must learn to identify non-value added activities in the office area of the company while becoming familiar with the numerous lean tools and how they can be used to bring about continuous improvement.

As with Lean manufacturing, Lean Office Value Stream Mapping is a diagnostic tool used to establish the information and material flow in the office environment. Both current and future Value Stream Mapping incorporates standard icons and data collection to depict information and material flow. The primary benefit of the current state Value Stream Map is to capture the flow and present it in a manner that can be easily understood and analyzed by the VSM team. The metrics presented in the current state provide a basis for determining how ‘lean’ the overall process is in its current state.

The Future State Value Stream Map allows the team to gauge the impact of the implementation of various lean concepts at specific points in the information and material flow. Typical lean tools include Kanban Pull systems, point of use storage, and the implementation of process flow wherever possible. Future State maps are generated with specific improvement opportunities to provide guidance on what concepts to implement. The impact of the proposed activities in a future state map can be quantified in the comparison of the future state metrics to the current state metrics.
